Post Treatment
The healing time for any given treatment varies between different clients. The following represents the general recovery phases you might expect. Individual clients may experience variations from this course.
- Pigment IPL Treatments: Browning or darkening of the skin pigment, and purplish or black tints to a dark pigment, as well as crusting of the pigmented area over a few days, may all occur as part of normal post-treatment healing. Crusting will flake off, and while erythema and edema may also appear, these symptoms will resolve in 3 to 7 days.
- Vascular Lesion IPL Treatments: Blanching, greying, or a deep purple tinting or blackening of the vessel may occur over the course of a few days as the damaged tissue will be broken down and absorbed. This may last approximately 3 to 7 days.
- Swelling/Discomfort/Redness: Swelling of your wrinkles occurs immediately. Significant swelling and redness of the treated areas and untreated parts may occur following your procedure, and will be maximal at 24-48 hours. To minimize swelling, keep your head elevated. It is not uncommon for clients to experience under-eye swelling for the first 1 to 2 days, but this swelling will subside. There will be redness and slight heat emanating from the treated area for the first 24 hours, akin to a mild sunburn. It is unusual to experience severe or excessive pain; you should notify us if this occurs. Tiny scabs will usually be formed 24-72 hours post-treatment, and may remain for several days. The scabs should not be touched or scratched even if they itch, and should be allowed to shed off naturally.
- Activity: Some mild discomfort may occasionally follow treatment. You may return to regular activities immediately. It is advised that you avoid hot baths, saunas, Jacuzzis, and pools for the first 2 days following treatment, as bacteria found in these environments could cause an infection. It is best to avoid applying ice or cooling compresses to the treated area, as the heat emanating from the skin is the body’s natural healing response. However, if you are experiencing extreme heat or discomfort, you may use cold compresses to soothe the area.
- Moisturizer: Post-treatment care, including applying of moisturizers or supporting creams on the treated skin, is at the Physician’s discretion.
- Make-Up: After 24 hours, most patients are able to apply makeup to hide the pinkness of the skin. It is important that you remove all makeup that is applied to the skin at night. Do not sleep with makeup on the treated area.
- Avoiding direct sun should become a permanent component of your long-term skin care program.
- Always use an SPF 30 or greater beginning 24-48 hours after the skin has fully healed. Sun exposure, tanning beds, and artificial sunless tanning lotions are not allowed in the treated areas during the course of the treatment and healing.
- Long-Term Skin Care: In addition to avoiding direct sun exposure, we suggest all clients use long-term skin care that will optimize the youthful, rejuvenated appearance you have achieved. We offer clients a program for long- term facial skin maintenance This unique program offers state of-the-art skin maintaining and rejuvenating creams that are only available and administered by our medical team.

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a sclerosant detergent solution into the compromised vein. This causes the vein wall to collapse, dissolve and disappear as the body gradually absorbs them.
Multiple treatments may be required, and results are not guaranteed. Satisfactory results are often 3-6 weeks after the initial treatment however results may take 12 months to achieve.
Possible Complications & Side Effects
There are several possible side effects seen with non-surgical vein treatment that are considered a normal consequence of successful treatment.
Stinging sensation may be experienced at the time of treatment, which settles within minutes.
Bruising will disappear over a couple weeks.
Darkening of treated veins soon after treatment is common and a sign of successful therapy. This slowly fades with satisfactory results typically after 3 months. The final appearance may take up to 2 years to achieve and residual staining may remain.
Blood Trapping can lead to tender lumps along the course of the treated veins and is common with treatment of all vein sizes. This is harmless however may make the vessels more noticeable in the first few weeks. Trapped blood is usually drained with a needle at your review appointment and accelerates the healing process.
Aching in the legs for the first few days can occur after treatment. This is more common with treatment of larger veins and usually relieved by walking.
Phlebitis is the appearance of tender, red swollen areas, and it due to inflammation of the treated veins. This is a sterile inflammation resulting from the vein closing and rarely due to infection. Phlebitis can be treated with anti-inflammatory medication and improves with walking and continued use of compression stockings.
Recurrence of compromised veins can develop in the future and may be necessary to have further intervention. This is not uncommon with isolated compromised veins as an underlying cause cannot be addressed.
Cosmetic issues whilst your leg will be dramatically improved by your intervention. It is impossible to achieve perfection and a realistic expectation is essential. Additional sclerotherapy or topical laser may be required. Compromised veins will commonly persist and the focus of treatments is an ‘age appropriate’ outcome.
There are possible complications that can occur with non-surgical vein treatment even when the greatest of care is taken.
Pigmentation is the appearance of brown marks on the skin located over or near the treated veins. This is a common consequence of therapy. Pigmented areas are composed of haemosiderin (a form of iron) that can become trapped in the skin. In most patients the pigmentation gradually fades, disappearing completely within 3-12 months however pigmentation lasting greater than 12 months can occur. While the skin is pigmented it should be protected from the sun as it is believed UV exposure can result in permanent pigmentation.
Matting is the development of an extremely fine network of spider veins over a treated vein. This usually resolves spontaneously though occasionally require further treatment. Some may persist despite further treatment and is most common in people with extensive surface veins and in overweight people with poor muscle tone.
Persistent lumps under the skin may still be present after many months. These are harmless, not cosmetically concerning and continue to fade with time.
Swelling of the leg or ankle occurs occasionally and is due to inflammation under the skin. This will settle with time and can be assisted by wearing compression stockings, elevating the leg when sitting and regular walking.
Numbness of the skin is rare and temporary but can last up to three months. This is commonly located along the inner aspect or back of the calf and is due to irritation of the nerves that lie near an injected vein.
Migraine sufferers may experience visual disturbances lasting a few minutes when treated with injection sclerotherapy followed by headache. Taking a mild analgesic such as paracetamol or an anti-migraine medication may assist. Please advise your practitioner if you have a history of migraines.
Ulcers of the skin are extremely rare and usually appear as small, painful sores within two weeks of injection sclerotherapy treatment. This occurs when sclerosant passes from the injected veins into small associated skin arteries. Ulcers typically heal slowly and may leave scarring. If the sclerosant is inadvertently injected into an artery, this can result in significant muscle and skin damage. This is an extremely rare complication occurring only 1:10000 cases.
Allergic reactions to the sclerosant used are rare but may be life threatening. Please notify your practitioner of any known hypersensitivity or allergies and if you have any concerns.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a clot in the deep venous system, not in the treated vein. DVT may lead to clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism) which can be a life-threatening condition requiring hospitalisation. This is extremely rare with the approximate risk is less than 1:2000 patients for sclerotherapy. It is advisable to avoid long distance travel (greater than four hours duration) for at least four weeks following the treatment of compromised veins. Symptoms of DVT and pulmonary embolism include a painful swollen calf or leg unrelieved by walking, unusual shortness of breath, cough with or without blood stain sputum and stabbing chest pain. Should you experience any of these symptoms please contact your practitioner immediately.
Precautions
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Sclerotherapy is best avoided when pregnant or breastfeeding as there is no evidence that ensures its safety. Vein treatments during pregnancy also have poor efficacy and often produce poor results. It is recommended that sclerotherapy should be avoided if pregnancy is contemplated within the treatment course. Veins that appear during pregnancy should be treated before the next pregnancy to avoid deterioration with subsequent pregnancies.
- Oral contraception and hormone replacement therapy: There is no current evidence that taking a low dose contraceptive pill or HRT increases the risk of thrombosis post sclerotherapy treatment.
- Long haul travel: Travelling >4hours for >4weeks should be avoided after the procedure. This includes long car journeys which, if undertaken, should have frequent (2 hourly) stops to facilitate 10 minutes of brisk walking.
- Operations: Major surgery, including orthopaedic procedures such as arthroscopy, within 6 weeks of the procedure.
Preparation Before Procedure
- Do not apply moisturizer to your legs on the day of procedure.
- Avoid using fake tan for at least two weeks prior to procedure
- Avoid exposing the treatment area to UV for at least one week.
Aftercare
Compression stockings:
- Your practitioner will advise you if compression stockings are necessary and the length of time required.
- Generally, minor isolated cosmetic treatments does not require the use of compression stockings and the injected area will be dressed with a small compression bandage. This is to be worn continuously for four days.
- For more extensive treatments, compression stocking are to be worn continuously for four days, then only during the day for 10days and removed last thing before bed.
