Are you cleansing your skin properly?

Good skin health starts with a thorough cleanse and many of us underestimate the importance of this crucial step in our daily skin routines. Not only does cleansing create a beautifully clean base for the application of all your hardworking skincare products, it’s also a gorgeous ritual, a time to slow down and really pay your mind and body some love and attention before the frantic day begins or as you wind down for the evening.

With self-care rituals being more important than ever at the moment, we’ve created the ultimate guide to help you ace the perfect cleansing routine.

WASH YOUR HANDS FIRST
This should be second nature for everyone by now, but you’d be amazed just how many people launch into their skincare routines without washing their hands first! Bacteria from your hands will transfer to your face so always start with clean hands.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CLEANSER
Selecting the perfect cleanser for your skin type will work wonders in helping you target any concerns as cleansing should be the first step in your routine to target any issues. As a general rule, gel cleansers are usually suited to more oily, acne prone skin types as they are formulated with acids to cut through pollution, oil and makeup. Cream and oil cleansers are non-foaming, so are perfect for a more sensitive or dehydrated skin-type as they won’t strip the skin and help to replenish moisture levels.

ALWAYS DOUBLE CLEANSE AT NIGHT
Double cleansing should an essential step of any evening skincare ritual, especially if you are wearing makeup, work in a polluted area or have oily skin. The effects of sleeping in makeup extend far beyond clogged pores and congestion. In the long term, you’re looking at premature ageing thanks to the breakdown of collagen from environmental pollutants left on the skin.

The first cleanse with a micellar or oil based cleanser removes makeup and surface debris, the second cleanse ensures a clean use ready for serums and hydrators.

DON’T EXFOLIATE BEFORE CLEANSING
If you’re using a scrub, cleansing first is crucial to removing pollutants, excess oil and makeup from the surface. This will allow your exfoliant to penetrate deeper and reveal fresh, beautiful skin cells. On the topic of exfoliants, physical and chemical scrubs shouldn’t be used on the same day, choose one over the other.

AVOID HOT WATER
Super hot water will upset your skin barrier function by inflaming and irritating the skin, so make sure the water is warm. If you’re cleansing in the shower, resist the temptation to put your face directly into the stream of the water as this can burst tiny blood vessels resulting in visible broken capillaries on your face and décolletage.

DON'T RUSH THE PROCESS
Take your time when cleansing, really allow yourself this moment in the morning and evening to practice a little self-care ritual. Skincare is very ritualistic, so it’s nice to set aside this time even if it’s just five minutes, to focus on you. Breathe in the scent of your cleanser, massage the formula all the way down your neck and décolletage, focusing on pressure points. Facial massage is wonderful for helping with lymphatic drainage to de-puff the face and improve circulation.
