Meet our founder, Dr Clara Hurst

What was your first job in the beauty industry?

My first job was in an amazing space in Cardiff Bay in the United Kingdom. I leased a room and set up my own independent small business as a cosmetic injector, called The Mulberry Clinic, and I still have it now along with the same patients I had 15 years ago.

Working out of The Mulberry Clinic taught me that to succeed in business, you really have to be prepared to bend over backward for your clients. My ethos has always been that my clients are doing me a favour, not the other way around! I have always strived to make my clients feel valued, which I think has paid off given I still have a very loyal patient base 15 years on!

What does a normal day look like for you?

If I am in the clinic then usually quite an early start, my business partner and I have our one on one work meetings over a 6am morning beach walk with our dogs then we start any business meetings straight after school drop off at 8am. I usually then start seeing patients from 9am although some days it’s from 7am! I’m lucky, I’m able to do school pick up at least 3 times a week and spend those afternoons with my kids- we are making the most of these gorgeous sunny Perth days and heading to the beach for a swim!

I spend early evenings with the family then it’s back to work and sorting out the administration side of the business, there's always something to be done when you're a small business owner!

If I'm not treating patients in the clinic then I try and fit in a beach walk or Pilates class in the morning followed by school drop off and then time with my little boy, Will. My day then usually consists of clinic visits, emails and time with my family.

What inspired you to become a business owner?

My perfectionism I think! I have really high standards and I am very particular about what I expect from a service and I found that nowhere I had worked ever really stood for what I represented, so I created it myself!

With Blanc, I saw a gap in the market in Perth to provide a really high-end, luxurious service where absolutely everything is considered and not a single detail is overlooked.

What do you love most about the aesthetics industry?

I also love how it's become such a positive, supportive and inclusive community. I really don't feel like there is much animosity, everyone is always more than happy to help each other succeed and I've experienced that first hand with so many incredible doctors, aestheticians and dermal therapists that I know I can call on at any time. I’m so fortunate to have friends and colleagues in the industry all over the world - being part of such a global community is amazing and I’m grateful to social media for allowing us to connect whenever, wherever!

What about the future of our industry excites you?

I'm always so excited by the ever-expanding nature of treatments and technology. The ability to offer patients types of treatments that once required quite invasive procedures in a walk-in/walk-out environment with minimal downtime is such a game-changer for our industry.

What advice would you give to the next generation of beauty industry leaders?

Never stop evolving. Our industry, in particular, is always changing and advancing due to new (and amazing technologies) which means you always have to be one step ahead of the game to ensure your offering is unique and one of a kind. You can never be too educated in this industry so spend every minute that you have available learning and growing.

Don’t ever do it for the money. Do it because you love it, you’re the best at it and you want to give the best service. If you love it the money will follow.

Start small. Become really good at being small, then grow organically. Take some big risks when you know you can and allow it to flourish from there.
