The ABC's of Face Serums

Face serums. You hear about them all the time, every beauty expert spouts their benefits, but what exactly are they? And how should you use them? Every good skincare regime should feature a nourishing mix of ingredients to protect, nourish and correct, but it can be hard to know where to start. We sat down with the Blanc skin gurus to get the lowdown on how to take your skincare game to the next level….

VITAMIN A

What is it?
Also known as retinol, there’s not much this powerhouse ingredient can’t do! Vitamin A promotes skin renewal, prevents signs of ageing and UV damage, improves skin tone and combats acne.

How should I use it?
Quite a potent little number, it is crucial to start slow with retinol and increase usage gradually. Vitamin A should definitely be applied only at night and let it work its magic while you sleep!

Our favourite vitamin a products…
The Medik8 Crystal Retinal rage is perfect for Vitamin A newbies as it comes in different strength formulations. Each serum is stronger than the other meaning you can gradually and safely introduce it to your skincare regime. Ladies with babies on board should opt for pregnancy safe formulas such as Medik8’s Bakuchiol Peptides.

VITAMIN B

What is it?
Everyone needs a little Vitamin B in their regime! The best form of Vitamin B is Vitamin B3, also known as Niacinamide. This skin hero is an all round crowd pleaser and perfect for all skin types. It helps to reduce inflammation, boost hydration, regulates excess sebum and brightens dull skin.

How should I use it?
However you like! The beauty of niacinamide is that it can be layered under other serums, moisturisers, SPF and makeup - day or night.

Our favourite vitamin b products…
Medik8’s Hydr8 B5 and Hydr8 B5 Intense have reached cult status here at Blanc, and for good reason too. They’re silky smooth and fast absorbed by the skin, creating supple, hydrated skin instantly. They are also super soothing and help to calm post-treatment or irritated skin.

VITAMIN C

What is it?
Consider it a big glass of orange juice for your skin, Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant that helps to regenerate cells, reduce wrinkles by aiding collagen production and protect against sun damage. Safe for most skin types, Vitamin C is also known as a pigmentation fading powerhouse giving skin a really gorgeous glow.

How should I use it?
While there’s no hard and fast rule about when to apply Vitamin C, we advise incorporating it as part of your morning skincare routine. Vitamin C becomes less effective when exposed to light so it’s important to give it time to absorb into your skin before going outside.

Our favourite vitamin c products…
The C-Tetra range by Medik8 is one of the most popular vitamin c serum ranges and our clients see great results by incorporating these into their regimes. As with vitamin A, we always recommend starting small as sometimes ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can potentially irritate some skin types.

So, what’s next? We recommend booking in with one of our dermal therapists for a thorough consultation. Our team can properly assess your skin and advise on the best products to incorporate into your regime for best results.
